Potty Training Tips For Your New Puppy

screenshot-docs.google.com-2022.07.30-00_20_24

Now that you have your new puppy, potty training is probably one of your top priorities. It's essential to start early and be consistent with potty training, so your pup can learn quickly. Here are a few tips to help get you started:

Learn The Signs That Your Puppy Is About To Go

The first step is to learn the signs that your puppy needs to go potty. You need to know what actions she performs when she has an urge to eliminate and how long those actions take place before she does anything about it. Some common signals are whining, pacing, and sniffing around. Puppies also tend to squat when they need to go. If you are able to catch your puppy in the act, be sure to take them outside immediately.

Establish A Regular Feeding Schedule

One of the most essential aspects of potty training a new puppy is establishing a regular feeding schedule. This will help you to better predict when your puppy is likely to need to go outside to relieve themselves. You should also try to keep your puppy on a consistent routine as much as possible, so they know what to expect.

Pick A Potty Spot Outside, And Take Them There Often

This will help your pup associate going potty with that specific spot. If you catch them peeing or pooping inside, say "NO" in a firm voice and immediately take them to the designated spot outside. Make sure the spot you pick is an area that's easily accessible by your puppy and also easy for you to clean up after.

Keep An Eye On Your Puppy At All Times

The best way to prevent potty training accidents is by keeping an eye on your puppy at all times. If you can't t keep an eye on your pup at all times, put them in a crate. Puppies usually won't go to the bathroom where they sleep, so when you place your puppy in the crate, be sure to take your fur baby outside immediately after he wakes up.

Reward Your Puppy

Rewarding your puppy when they go potty at the correct place is essential to potty training. If your puppy associates good things with going to the bathroom in the right spot, it will be more likely to continue doing so. There are a few different ways you can reward your pup, depending on what works best for you.

Some people like to give their puppy a treat every time they go potty in the right spot, and others may just pat them on the head or scratch them behind the ears. Whatever method you opt for, make sure you are consistent with it. If you stop rewarding your pup once they have learned where to go, they may start having accidents again.

It may seem like a lot of work, but potty training your puppy will instill discipline in your new puppy and allow you more time to enjoy each other's company. These tips are sure to make potty training a little less stressful for both of you.
